In 2024, the Volga Region University of Sports celebrates its fiftieth anniversary. The history of one of the country's leading sports universities began half a century ago - in 1974, when a branch of the Volgograd Institute of Physical Education was opened in the Kirovsky district of Kazan.

Later - in 1986 - the young sports university was transferred to the then actively developing Naberezhnye Chelny in connection with the construction of the Kama Automobile Plant. In 1997, the Kama State Institute of Physical Culture (KamGIFK) was established on the basis of the branch.

In 2006, the institution was given the status of an academy - it was renamed the Kama State Academy of Physical Culture, Sports and Tourism (KamGIFKSiT).

As part of the Universiade Legacy Concept, in 2010 the university returned to Kazan and received not only a new name - the Volga Region State Academy of Physical Culture, Sports and Tourism (PovGAFKSiT), but also inherited seven modern sports facilities built for the Universiade.

Over the next 10 years, the Volga Region Academy actively developed and became one of the largest "players" in the Russian sports education market - it reached its design capacity for enrolling applicants, formed the university's teaching staff and the main pool of educational programmes.

In March 2021, the Volga Region State Academy of Physical Culture, Sports and Tourism was renamed the Volga Region State University of Physical Culture, Sports and Tourism. The new status expanded opportunities in educational, scientific and international spheres of activity.

The new history of the university dates back to 2013, but the foundation was laid in 1974. The Volga Region University will devote the whole year to this date. Many events will be held under the aegis of the fiftieth anniversary of our university - a large number of scientific and practical conferences, sports and sports events are planned, where we will be glad to see both our students, staff and teaching staff, as well as veterans and alumni.
