Today - 26 September - Volga Region University celebrates its fiftieth anniversary. We offer to recall memorable dates, names and places from the half-century history of the university.
In 2010, Yusup Yakubov became rector of the Volga Region Academy for ten years.
The Universiade Legacy concept was developed in preparation for the 2013 World University Games in Kazan. At that time, the sports academy had about 1,600 students.
The first facility of the university was the Burevestnik swimming pool, where the staff moved in in November 2010, and a year later the first intake of students took place.
In autumn 2012, the Centre for Advanced Training and Retraining of Sports Professionals was established, headed by Tatiana Kirillova, daughter of Rector Georgy Tsyganov. The opening of the centre was a response to a request from the Ministry of Sport of Tatarstan, headed at the time by Rafis Burganov.
After Burevestnik, the rest of the Universiade sports facilities were built, seven of which were given to the Volga Region Academy:
Gymnastics Centre, Aquatics Palace, Rowing Centre, Zilant Ice Palace, Tennis Academy and Badminton Centre.
The Academy of Sports also received one third of the Universiade Village, along with the main building - the International Information Centre, where the organisational centre of the competitions was located during the Universiade. It was later repurposed as an academic building, where students moved in on 1 September 2013.
On 17 September 2020, Rafis Burganov became the head of the university. A year later - on 27 December 2021 - the university was renamed Volga Region State University of Physical Culture, Sports and Tourism by order of the Russian Minister of Sport.
