The next qualifying round of the All-Russian Amateur Handball Tournament "Heroes of the City" was held the other day in the KAI-Olympus Sports Hall.
On the first day of the competition female athletes of the Volga Region University of Sports and Tourism came onto the court. The students easily defeated the team of Togliatti "OLYMPIA" with a score of 14:8. In the second match against "Leader" (Kazan) the women handball players of the Volga Region State University of Sports and Tourism immediately created a comfortable "gap" in the score and won 11-3. As a result of these two matches the women's team made it to the play-offs and kept fighting for the medals.
The girls were followed by the University of Sport's men's national team, playing in the Professional Men's category. They were to face Khimiki Kazan and play in the tournament's favourite "Tatar derby" against Laishevskiye Lisi. The first game ended with the victory of our students (9-7), but in the second game the team failed to turn the tide and build up their lead, losing 8-11. Despite the setback, the boys also kept fighting for play-off medals.
The second match day started with a game between the University of Sports and Bastion (Izhevsk). The victory (12-5) and reaching the semi-finals was what set the mood for the day. The first semi-final match was played by the girls, in which they beat "Izhevsk-Lady" (7:5). (7:5). This meant only that the women's team had already secured their place on the podium. "Gold or silver? The answer became clear in the match with OLYMPIA-Junior (Togliatti), where unfortunately the opponent was stronger (16:9). The silver medallists in the Women's category were the University of Sports. In a tough semi-final our boys snatched a victory from KNITU-KAI (13:12), but in the final they lost to Zilant with a score 19:24, and won the tournament silver.
