This week - 26 September - Volga Region University will celebrate its fiftieth anniversary.
We offer to recall memorable dates, names and places from the half-century history of the university.
In May 1986 the Kazan branch of the university moved to Naberezhnye Chelny (Brezhnev in those years). The rector was changed - he became Doctor of Medical Sciences Eric Aukhadeev.
The building for the institute was allocated only at the end of the year, before that students and teachers occupied a branch of the Elabuga State Pedagogical University. The swimming pool ‘Dolphin’ and sports complex ‘Naberezhnochelninsky’ were transferred only on the lease rights. The school, the building of which was given to the university, required repair, so after classes the teachers and students were engaged in the improvement of classrooms and adjacent areas.
In 1988-1989 Nikolay Moiseev was the rector of the university. After leaving his post he worked at the university for another 20 years and headed the department of theory and methods of gymnastics and swimming.
In 1989 Georgy Tsyganov became the rector of the university for ten years, whose name is nowadays carried by the department of athletics and rowing sports of the Volga Region University.
In 1995, the university's footballers won bronze medals at the World Summer Universiade in Fukuoka, Japan, under the flag of the Russian national team.
In 1997, the branch was renamed Kama State Institute of Physical Culture and became independent. A significant event during this period was the opening of the university branch in Novocheboksarsk, Chuvashia.
