Volga Region University track and field athletes completed their performance at the 10th All-Russian Summer Universiade. The competition, held in Saransk, brought together over 300 of the country's top athletes from 38 regions. A total of 41 medal events were contested.
Fourth-year student Karina Bildanova and master's student Diana Nikonova each won gold for the university. Diana won the javelin throw, finishing almost three meters ahead of the silver medalist. Karina, meanwhile, bested her competitors in the shot put, winning by four centimeters.
Furthermore, Karina and Diana took fourth and third place in the discus throw, throwing 37.80 and 40.48 meters, respectively.
Fourth-year student Vasilisa Yadryshnikova also represented the University of Sports and Tourism at the Universiade in the 100m and 400m hurdles, finishing in the top ten – just four seconds short of the podium.
"I'd give my performance at the Universiade a solid B. I'm generally pleased with my javelin throw result, but unfortunately, I didn't perform at my true level in the discus throw," noted Diana Nikonova. "My impressions of the tournament are extremely positive: there was a lot of excitement in the field and incredible support from the stands. The competition was vibrant in its atmosphere and energy."
The Russian Championships are the main start of the season for me. The Universiade was an important step in testing myself in competitive conditions and realizing my potential in the javelin throw. And the Spartakiad of the Peoples of Russia is coming up, which is on par with the Russian Championships in terms of competition, so it's too early to rest. The season continues!
