The Lobachevsky National Research Nizhny Novgorod State University has awarded Herman Fan-Jung, Associate Professor of the Department of Social Sciences and Humanities at Volga Region University, a Doctor of Sciences degree. The Higher Attestation Commission of the Russian Ministry of Education and Science confirmed the board's decision.

The topic of his doctoral dissertation was advanced chemical production as a factor in the socioeconomic development of the Volga-Kama region from 1850 to 1917.

In his work, he studied and summarized the impact of advanced chemical production in the second half of the 19th and early 20th centuries on the socioeconomic development of the former Vyatka, Kazan, Nizhny Novgorod, and Perm provinces. Among the enterprises he examined were the Kokshan and Bondyuzhsky plants, the Krestovnikov brothers' Kazan plant, Salolin JSC, and the Berezniki plant. All of these plants, except the Kokshan plant, are still in operation.

Herman Fan-Yung shared that the topic of his PhD dissertation was approved in 2012. After defending it in 2016, he began work on his doctoral dissertation, which took ten years to complete. He also noted that the topic of his research is a continuation of a previously little-recognized problem, although it remains relevant today: the impact of advanced and knowledge-intensive industries on the dynamics of socioeconomic relations in a given region.

"The award of a doctorate is recognition of my achievements in scientific research. It demonstrates the scientific community's trust in my work. I am grateful to the university's leadership for the favorable working conditions," noted Herman Fan-Yung.

He also explained that the initial stage is always considered the most difficult. According to him, any scientist beginning research doesn't yet know what they'll find. The most important thing is collecting and synthesizing archival information, that is, unpublished sources, and the corresponding research methodology.
