Students of the Volga Region University became bronze medalists of the championship of the National Student Football League of the Upper Division of Group “B”. The 20th interregional tournament ended the other day in Essentuki (Stavropol Territory).
As part of the regular championship, the football players of the University of Sports and Tourism played 15 matches; in the final round, the wards of Dmitry Denisenko and Valery Pokaninov met with the teams of the Academy of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the DPR named after F.E. Dzerzhinsky (Donetsk), North Caucasus Federal University (Stavropol) and St. Petersburg Mining University.
First, the Volga Region University team confidently beat Stavropol NCFU (4:0), then St. Petersburg SPGU (6:2). In the decisive game against the Donetsk AMVD of the DPR, the main time ended in a goalless draw; in extra time, the football players from Donetsk were more fortunate, who managed to carry out one successful attack - 0:1.
As Valery Pokaninov, the team coach and head of the department of theory and methodology of football and hockey, noted, after a two-year break, the University team resumed its performance in the NSFL.
“The tournament is very strong, each team has a high-quality squad of players. The geography of participants is wide from Elista to St. Petersburg - Moscow, Donetsk, Rostov, Novocherkassk, Saransk, Makhachkala, Nalchik, Belgorod,” says Valeria Pokaninov. — The students showed character and ability. Over the years of playing in the League, this is the second result. We were first, fourth and twice seventh. This year there are bronze medalists.”
