The Russian Ministry of Education and Science announces an additional competitive selection for grants to support world-class research and education centres (RECs). The collection of applications for the competition will last until 29 February 2024.

The amounts of grants for the winners will be determined in 2024 by the Council of world-class research and education centres. The decision on the rotation of research and education centres, taking into account the winners of the selection, will be made on the basis of performance indicators and expert assessments of the results of the work of research and education centres. The rotation will allow to competently distribute federal resources for the effective fulfilment of the instructions of the President of Russia. Funding will be directed to the implementation of technological projects, personnel training and commercialisation of scientific developments.

Today, 157 universities, 142 scientific organisations and 383 companies of the real sector of the economy are involved in the work of NECs. The centres' activity programmes include more than 200 technological projects in 69 areas that meet the priorities of Russia's scientific and technological development. These include biotechnology, innovative production, ecology, environmental management, digital transformation of the oil and gas industry and many others.

It should be reminded that the initiator of the establishment of a research and education centre is a constituent entity of the Russian Federation, which develops a programme of activities together with universities and (or) scientific organisations and submits it to the competition for a grant. For the work of a scientific and educational platform it is necessary to form a supervisory and management boards (other management bodies are created at the discretion of the centre).

Centres can also be interregional. For example, the Engineering of the Future Centre implements projects in the field of aerospace technologies and intelligent transport systems in the Samara, Penza, Tambov, Ulyanovsk regions, the Republics of Mordovia and Chuvashia. And in order to develop the scientific and technological potential of the North-East of Russia and the Arctic territory there is a research and development centre "North: Territory of Sustainable Development" (Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), Kamchatka Krai, Magadan, Sakhalin Oblasts, Chukotka Autonomous Okrug).
