Today, the Kazan Kremlin honoured the Strela rugby club - the winner of the 2023 Russian Rugby Cup. Rustam Minnikhanov, the Rais of Tatarstan, congratulated the athletes and coaches on winning the trophy. The ceremony was attended by the Prime Minister of Tatarstan, member of the Supreme Council of the Russian Rugby Federation Alexey Pesoshin, Rector of the Volga Region University of Physical Culture, Sports and Tourism Rafis Burganov.
We would like to remind you that on 17 September at the VTB Arena Kazan Arrows defeated Krasnoyarsk Krasny Yar 23-12. The victory allowed the Kazan team to become the winner of the Russian Cup for the first time in its history.
Athletes from the University of Sport, forwards Bait Said Amin Mohamed Hassan and Arseniy Petrushinin and defencemen Dmitry Denisov, Bulat Shamsuddinov and Denis Fomin were part of the champion team.
"Within the framework of the Russian Cup draw you demonstrated the highest sportsmanship, team spirit and faith in victory. We closely followed your performances and sincerely rejoiced at your successes," Rais of the republic said.
He noted that Tatarstan rugby has a rich history - the sport has been developed in the republic for 55 years. "Especially valuable for us is the fact that our players play in the team, and training is conducted by pupils of Tatarstan rugby. So we have a good foundation. Victory in the Cup of Russia is a great gift to the 55th anniversary", - emphasised Rustam Minnikhanov.
Today in the republic about 1,900 people are engaged in rugby, and more than 500 children and teenagers are brought up in sports schools. Much attention is paid to the development of the relevant infrastructure. In Kazan there is a football and rugby arena "Iskander", which allows to train and play games in any weather.
Rais Tatarstan noted that winning the Russian Cup is the result of systematic work of the entire team: players, coaching staff, management, administrative staff, Tatarstan Rugby Federation and sponsors.
"I am sure, thanks to your victory, rugby in Tatarstan will get a new impetus for further development and become even more popular among the population, and you will continue to delight us with your high sporting achievements and convincing victories," Rustam Minnikhanov added and presented the Acknowledgements of the Raisa of the Republic of Tatarstan.
Head coach of Kazan "Arrows" JP Neal thanked the leadership of the Republic for the support and attention to the development of rugby in Tatarstan, and also expressed the hope that the victory in the Cup of Russia-2023 will not be the last trophy of the team.
