75 students of the Volga Region University will take part in the International University Sports Festival, which will be held in Yekaterinburg. Athletes of the university will compete for awards in 11 out of 14 types of the program - in badminton, boxing, judo, table tennis, swimming, diving, sambo, wrestling, tennis, taekwondo and rhythmic gymnastics.
The rector of the Volga Region University Rafis Burganov will take part in the grand opening of the Festival, which will take place on August 20. The first official event of the sports festival was held on August 18 - the opening of the Sports Village, where the participants of the competitions live.
About 3,400 students from 240 universities will take part in the competition, who will compete for 197 sets of awards. The festival will be held with the participation of 36 countries of the world, including student teams from the BRICS member states, member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and member states of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).
As Oleg Matytsin, Minister of Sport of the Russian Federation, noted, such festivals contribute to the development of cooperation between countries in the issue of popularisation of physical culture and sport.
"Russia has repeatedly demonstrated its commitment to fair sport and equal competition. Over the past decade, our country hosted the World University Games in Kazan in 2013 and in Krasnoyarsk in 2019. Student athletes remember their participation in the Games with warmth, noting the friendliness and attentive approach of the host country," emphasised Oleg Matytsin in his welcoming message to the participants and guests of the Festival.
