The first defence of student projects under the Service Learning educational programme took place at the Volga Region State University of Physical Culture, Sports and Tourism.

The social customers were Kazan Family Hotel "Home Away from Home" for children undergoing long-term treatment and their parents, Kazan School No. 61 for children with disabilities, Kazan Boarding School No. 1 for children with disabilities, Kazan Gymnasium No. 6, and the university itself.

In the process of defending the projects, the students received feedback from them. Zhanna Semyakina, Director of School No. 61, thanked the students for their willingness to engage in complex social projects, active life position, and also gave recommendations for further development of the projects.

The Volga Region University of Physical Culture, Sports and Tourism launched an educational module "Service Learning".

It includes not only a course of lectures, but also a practical part, in which first-year students will try their hand at creating socially significant projects.

The result will be the defence of the projects and the subsequent implementation of the most successful ones.

The tasks and topics of research represent both the topics generated by the students themselves and the problems voiced by the university's social partners.

We would like to remind you that Volga Region University of Sports was among the universities that entered the pilot project of the federal programme "Service Learning" and since September 2023 has successfully implemented three projects commissioned by the Ministry of Education of Tatarstan, the Veterans' Council of the Republic and Gymnasium No. 6 in Kazan.

According to Natalia Grechannikova, Vice-Rector for Administration, Social Development and Youth Policy of the university, higher education institutions should take an active part in the development of the region.

"We are convinced that the mission of a modern university is to participate as much as possible in the development of the region in co-operation with local communities through the implementation of socially significant projects. "Service learning" is a tool in the realisation of this mission through the project approach", - stressed the Vice-Rector for Administrative Work, Social Development and Youth Policy of the University.
