The All-Russian sports and patriotic game "New Zarnitsa" among students of universities of physical culture started today at the Volga Region University of Physical Culture, Sports and Tourism. The game is timed to the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the state management body in the sphere of physical culture and sport and is held in Russia for the first time.

On the first competition day the participants had time to get acquainted, do morning exercises with Ekaterina Yachmeneva, a prize-winner of the World and European Championships in fitness aerobics, write the "Victory Dictation", pass a paramilitary obstacle course.

Rafis Burganov, Rector of the Volga Region University of Sport, welcomed the participants at the stage of the applied swimming relay race. He expressed his gratitude to the teams for their participation and interest in the competition and wished them active days.

"I wish you, in addition to the competition, have time to socialise with each other, to look at our city. We will be happy to watch, cheer for everyone", - said the rector.

"New Zarnitsa" is a sports and patriotic game based on the integration of sports activities and patriotic education in universities.

The Volga Region University of Physical Culture, Sports and Tourism was the organiser of the new type of competition. The university sets itself such tasks as promotion of physical culture, sports and health-improving work, attracting young people to a healthy lifestyle, military-applied sports; fostering a sense of patriotism in students; development of popular forms of sports and health-improving work.

The game is held in two stages: intra-university and final competitions on the basis of the sports university of Tatarstan.

Participating teams will fight for supremacy in such programmes as "Overcoming the paramilitary obstacle course", "Victory Dictation", "Applied swimming relay race", "New Zarnitsa" sport-patriotic game, as well as in a series of theoretical competitions "History of the Armed Forces of Russia", "Watch-contest of formation training and formation song", "Lasertag".
