On 6 May, the Burevestnik Sports Complex hosted the opening ceremony of the All-Russian Swimming Competition in memory of Dmitry Usov, a graduate of Volga Region University and Master of Sport in Swimming, who died heroically in a special military operation zone in Ukraine.

"At the meeting of the Academic Council of the Volga Region University, we decided, starting from this year, to name the Rector's Cup after our alumnus Dmitry Usov - a man who is a model of fighting for the honour of his team, the university and the country," Rector Rafis Burganov addressed the audience in his welcoming speech. - When the time came he did not hesitate to give his life for the freedom and independence of his country. The memory of Dmitry Usov will live on not only in the tournament, but also in our hearts. And this memory we will pass on to everyone who crosses the threshold of our university.

Marina Usova, Dmitry's mother, also took part in the opening ceremony. In her welcoming speech, she congratulated the competitors and fans on the approaching Victory Day and wished the young athletes to perform at their best. Vladimir Usov, Dmitry's father, and his wife Arjun Usov were also present.

More than 850 competitors from 12 higher education institutions and 30 regions of the country entered the competition. On the first day, prizes were awarded to girls and boys aged 9 to 18.

"This is not the first time we participate here, and we know that the organisation of these competitions is always at the highest level, so we love coming here," shared multiple Russian swimming champion and coach Yana Martynova. - If there had been such wonderful competitions in my childhood, I would have been so happy! Here the future champions have great opportunities: a fancy pool, beautiful prizes and everything is as serious as the adults! The whole coaching staff at our school have as much fun here as our young athletes. Last year we won fifteen medals and this time we hope to at least repeat the success!
