From this year, student athletes will be able to continue their sports careers and undergo sports training in their educational organisations. Sports training centres began to operate from 1 January 2023 in educational institutions of higher education and professional educational institutions subordinate to the Russian Ministry of Sport.
"The creation of such centres will help to maintain the continuity of the system of training of the sports reserve between children's and youth sports and sports of the highest achievements. Organisation of the centres at our sports universities will enable us to ensure a full-fledged training process for student-athletes. In this way, we are planning to optimise competition activities which, in turn, will help boost sport performance and train the country's young sport reserve," said Deputy Minister of Sport of the Russian Federation Odes Baisultanov.
In order to launch the pilot projects, the regulatory and legal framework, as well as the capacity of personnel and infrastructure to ensure the implementation of sports training, were analysed. Based on the results of the analysis, seven higher education institutions and two Olympic reserve schools of the Ministry of Sports of Russia, which are the flagships of the sports education sector, were selected. In 2022, the educational institutions purchased the necessary equipment and equipment to implement additional educational programmes for sports training in Olympic sports.
The list of pilot projects, along with the Kuban State University of Physical Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Moscow State Academy of Physical Culture, the Voronezh State Academy of Sports, the Smolensk State University, the National State University of Physical Culture, Sports and Health named after P. F. Lesgaft (Lesgaft National University), the Russian State University of Physical Culture, Sports and Health (Lesgaft National University) and the Russian State University of Physical Culture, Sports and Health (Lesgaft National University) was added to the list of pilot projects. P.F. Lesgaft (St. Petersburg), the Russian University of Sports "GTsOLIFK", the Volga Region State University of Physical Culture, Sports and Tourism was included.
Current training opportunities include rowing, athletics, swimming, boxing, wrestling, basketball, rhythmic gymnastics, shooting, speed skating and biathlon.
Methodological support for the creation and further activities of the centres is provided by the Federal State Budgetary Institution "Federal Sports Reserve Training Centre". Methodological recommendations on creating such centres have been developed, a standard set of documents has been submitted and a methodological guide "Development of physical qualities of students at the stages of sports training" has been published.
"The opening of the CSPC for student national teams allows us to talk about new prospects for the development of university sports. The availability of sports training programmes, the involvement of qualified coaches and specialists in the field as well as additional funding will enable students of the university to significantly improve their sports skills," said Kuban State University of Physical Culture, Sports and Tourism Rector Sultan Akhmetov.
The sports training centres for student national teams have been established in accordance with the lists of instructions of the President of the Russian Federation No. Pr-759 dated 30 April 2019 and No. Pr-1760 dated 30 October 2020.
