Eternal memory and glory to those who defended the Motherland during the Great Patriotic War: fought for the freedom of the people on the front line and forged the Victory in the rear. In our column “Immortal Memory”, timed to the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory and the Year of the Defender of the Fatherland, college students of Volga Region University will tell about the feats of their ancestors, who did everything to ensure that we had a peaceful sky above our heads.

Today Aysylu Kamalieva, a first-year student of Tourism and Hospitality, shared the story of her brave great-grandfather Gabdulkhai Akhmadullin, who served in reconnaissance during the Great Patriotic War. Once during a heavy battle he performed a heroic feat, contributing to the Great Victory.

War is a terrible word that brings suffering, destruction and death. War was a severe test for our people. It invaded the lives of our family, as well as the lives of millions of others. The entire Soviet people stood up in defense of our Motherland.

My great-grandfather Akhmadullin Gabdulkhai Akhmadullovich was born on December 25, 1924 in the village of Smail. His childhood passed in a difficult time. There were five children in the family. After the death of his father, all the burdens fell on the shoulders of his mother Mahiasma. She tried very hard to put all the children in school so that everyone could get an education. When my great-grandfather finished the eighth grade, he was sent to study in Kazan in a labor union. Having learned to work on machine tools, he went to Donbass to extract coal in the mine. But the Great Patriotic War began, and great-grandfather was sent home.

He wanted to go to war as a volunteer, but because of his age he was not taken. In 1943 he was called to the military enlistment office, and my great-grandfather Gabdulkhai went to war. They were sent to a camp to study - it was hard there and there was a lack of food. After a while he got to the front of Ukraine. My great-grandfather was very agile, so he went into reconnaissance. Every time he returned from a combat mission, he wrote a report about what he had learned during the reconnaissance.

Once, during a heavy battle, communication with the headquarters was suddenly cut off. My great-grandfather Gabdulkhai heroically went to look for the place where the wire was broken, and when he found it, he restored communication. On the way back a shell exploded near him and my great-grandfather lost consciousness. After that he was pulled out of the snow, and Gabdulkhai was hospitalized - because of a fragment of the exploded shell his leg had to be amputated.

Thus, at the age of 19 he returned home to the village of Smail without one leg. Gabdulkhai was awarded orders and medals. Despite the severe injury, he got a job as a salesman. He and his wife Gulsira brought up ten children. My great-grandfather is long gone, he passed away on June 30, 2017 in the village of Smail.

My family, like many other families, contributed to the common Victory. They are all heroes who gave us a peaceful sky over our heads and a happy life. Our main duty is to remember their feat, honor their memory and keep the peace. The road to Victory was long and difficult, but it was passed thanks to courage and fortitude. Every year on May 9 I join the Immortal Regiment on the streets of the city. Walking in the column, I feel proud of my great-grandfather Akhmadullin Gabdulhai Akhmadullovich. Thank you for the Victory!
